Character's Full Name: Rayna Valentine
PB: Emily Browning
Character Age: 21
Physical Description: Rayna is small and thin, coming in at just over five feet and just over a hundred pounds. She’s not the most physically capable person and may appear rather petite and fragile as a result. Her hair is dark brown, parted on the side, with some fringe. When left down it is just a little wavy and reaches down past her shoulder blades. Her face is angular, with large lips, pronounced cheekbones, and hazel, almond-shaped eyes. There’s also a very light smattering of freckles across her nose and cheeks. On the whole she wears light sundresses that are floral-patterened and cinched at the waist, or layered tanks and shorts for hiking.
Character's Species/Race (aka human, elf, dragonblood human, etc): Human (and about 1/4th elf but she’s rather unaware of it)

Character History: Rayna was born July 17th, 1990 in Denver, Colorado to John and Rhea Valentine. She was the youngest of the family by several years, with one older brother named Jacob. In seventh grade her family moved into the mountains of Colorado and planted roots just north of the Gould community. There they ran a bed and breakfast, complete with a handful of small cabins in and around the state park. In the mountains she was educated by her mother and her brother, and she also learned to manage the family animals – horses, chickens, dogs – and tend their land. She spent most of her time outdoors and completed a few youth programs at the local wildlife reserve. The winter of her sixteenth year, her mother left the family.

Just before her seventeenth birthday, Rayna met a young elf named Renart while she was out hiking. The two grew close and often met in the wilderness surrounding her home, and Ren introduced her to his only companion, a hawk named Sage. Over the course of the next three years, Rayna learned more about his craft and began spending more time in the wilderness. Not long after she turned twenty, Ren left. Sage remained behind, and often kept an eye on her. After a few weeks, Rayna settled back into the routine life of running the bed & breakfast with her father and Jacob. She also picked up extra work at the wildlife reserve and began looking for something else to do with her time.

Personality and Psychology: As a girl, Rayna was timid and shy, keeping to herself more than anything else. She gained a reputation for being rather amiable due to her desire to avoid confrontation, to the point where she would take on extra responsibilities (particularly from her brother) quietly and obediently. Her teachers dubbed her sweet and she had a propensity for learning, picking up tasks quickly. While she attracted friends easily, she preferred the company of pets and strays, showing compassion for the latter despite her parents’ insistence for her to leave them be. These traits stuck with her over time, for better or worse.

The one place she feels safe among the Colorado wilderness is her room. There, by herself, she’s not afraid to be herself. Not even her immense trust in her family allows her to be honest with them at all times. Rayna loves her family, but due to her fear of abandonment she tries not to love too much. Jacob and her father are the only two people who have not abandoned her, and she repays them by doing everything she can for them, especially since she can’t be honest with them. She’s far too afraid her feelings will hurt him, so she hides them—and she does it to everyone.

Ren instilled a new sense of self in Rayna. He helped her become independent – to the point of being rebellious at times – and helped her discover a love for adventure in herself. His aloofness rubbed off on her just a little, and he built up her self-esteem and backbone, so to speak. While he often prodded at her for her shortcomings, it was with good intent. By loving her, he showed her what she could love in herself. He introduced her to the world through his eyes, and opened her to the beauty of nature. He also strengthened her bond with animals, particularly her wolf-hybrid pup named Boaz.

Despite her love of the outdoors, Rayna loves rather girly things. When she’s not outside, she likes to wear dresses and read. She learned to sew and cook from her mother, before she left, and often takes care of the meals for her family and the guests staying at the family business. Even though she likes dressing up, she only wears heels on rare occasions and keeps her make-up simple. She’s a vegetarian, preferring to love animals rather than eat them, and she doesn’t join her father and brother on their hunting pursuits.

She deals with things by withdrawing from the world and confronting them internally. After her mother left, she spent days in her room. After Ren left, she did the same. It takes time for her to heal, but she prefers to do it alone. She’s never been good at talking her way through problems, especially large ones. Thanks to Ren’s assistance, her security in herself has grown to the point that she feels comfortable seeking adventure elsewhere, but she values familiarity and security greatly. It takes her a little longer to adapt to new situations, but she eventually gets there. She doesn’t like confrontation and she doesn’t do well in an argument; she’ll only fight back if absolutely necessary.

A large part of her life is her relationship with animals. They give her a constant companionship she lacks from not having friends, and she likes caring for them because it allows her to have a direct impact on something in the world. While most of the animals in the family are family pets, she has a strong bond with them, and her family is happy to let her do the work of training them and looking after them. After her mother left, she befriended a wolf-hybrid she named Boaz—or Bo, as she calls him. He follows her everywhere and Ren taught her how to train him. Thanks to her work on the wildlife reserve, she’s even begun learning how best to treat wounds, a skill she’s applied to Ren and herself a couple of times.

Just as animals (and, to some extent, people) gravitate toward her, she gravitates toward the water. Her quiet reservation and gentle disposition is charming in a way, though it can be as frustrating as her propensity to hide her true feelings in favor of being sure everyone gets along. Just like her feelings, though her opinions can be strong she doesn’t voice them unless it’s to someone she trusts, which has to be earned over time for her. She’s also very loyal and devoted to those who she believes she can trust, and will do anything in her power for those people—or animals, as is more often the case. On the whole she is amiable and easy-going, preferring to go with the flow rather than make her own waves.

Powers and Abilities: She’s not particularly gifted in one way or another. She’s good on her feet and can survive the elements, and Ren taught her some about navigating the wild. She has a few silly little certificates from her summer work programs with the wildlife refuge near her home, for things such as taking care of animals, nursing them back to health, basic training. Otherwise she has pretty basic skills.

Any other important information (including special inventory items in their possession): Ren left a book of letters and a journal of information for her before he left. Namely it contains some very old druidic, various notes, and a few letters he wrote to her during their time together. She keeps it with her when she can.

On the middle finger of her right hand she wears a ring her mother gave her. It’s sterling silver with small birds on both ends, and winds around her finger. She also wears a topaz pendent around her neck, given to her by Ren. They’re reminders, as painful as they can be.

Her most important “possession” is her wolf-hybrid, Boaz. He’s a mix of a Husky and a Timber Wolf, and while his coat is covered with grey, he’s mostly white. He has a gentle temperament, largely mirroring Rayna, but he is fiercely protective. They prefer to be together, and as such you can bet that she will have him flown across the pond with her. There’s also Sage, Ren’s hawk that was left behind to watch out for her.

Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights? Rayna loves the security of her family, her home, and the remote wilderness she lives in, but she’s begun to long for something more. She wants to fit in and be a part of something greater than she’s ever known. Joining the Knights would allow her to refine her skills and uncover her place in the grand scheme of things. She’d be reluctant to join only because she doesn’t know what she can offer, but she’s one to please and she’ll do whatever is in her capacity to prove that she can be a part of something like the Knights.

Do you have a preference for which NPC brought in your character? Anyone is fine!
